NEW DELHI: The share of suicides by self immolation and consuming poison have consistently fallen in the past two decades while the share of deaths by hanging has more than doubled between 2000 and 2021, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data show.
A comparative analysis of the suicide data published by the bureau show that the number of deaths by self immolation in 2021 was 4,195, which is nearly 64% less than the fatalities recorded by police in 2000. The data show that there has been reduction in the absolute number of fatalities and share in the total suicide deaths due to self immolation during these years. Even the share of women victims of self immolation has decreased from 66% in 2000 to 58% during 2021.
