Eric Dier admits he feared his England career was over after missing last summer’s run to the final of the Euros.

England suffered a heartbreaking loss on penalties to Italy in the final, but Dier missed the tournament altogether after being dropped due to a poor run of form. The Tottenham defender was part of both the Euro 2016 and 2018 World Cup squads.

But an upturn in fortunes saw him end a 22-month period in the international wilderness in September, with Dier starting both Nations League matches.

Dier brings plenty of experience to Gareth Southgate’s squad and the 28-year-old could complete an impressive turnaround if he features against Iran on Monday.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think that (my England career was over) was a possibility,” he said. “Obviously those thoughts go through your mind.
