The government has said millions of farmers across the country can work in their farms throughout the nationwide lockdown put in place over the coronavirus pandemic, officials said on Saturday.
The modalities of the relaxation will follow soon, according to officials.
Amending the original notification by the Union home ministry on the nationwide lockdown, the Centre has included farm operations such as harvesting and transport of harvest, apart from wholesale market and food aggregating activities etc as essential activities.
States are free to decide how to implement this order in a safe manner given the pandemic, officials said.
The countrywide restrictions were announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, March 24, with complete halt of all public transport, including flights, trains and interstate buses.
The lockdown came into effect the next day with only essential services allowed to operate.
