SRINAGAR: A day after the Supreme Court declined to stay the operation of J&K Land Grant Rules, issued on December 13, 2022, lieutenant-governor Manoj Sinha said it was some influential political families and land mafias that were trying to trigger a controversy over the issue because they had vested interests.
These elements had encroached huge chunks of public land in semi-urban and rural areas and had built huge shopping complexes or constructed hotels, and that was the reason they were trying to create misgivings among poor sections of society over the new land reforms, Sinha alleged.
As per the Land Grant Rules, all the outgoing lessees, except in the case of subsisting/expired leases for residential purposes, shall immediately hand over the possession of the land taken on lease to the government, failing which they shall be evicted.
