Make all tribunal appointments in 2 weeks or face contempt action: SC to govt | India News

NEW DELHI: Amid fresh stand-off between the Supreme Court and the Centre over the latter asserting the right to reject names recommended by SC judge-led panels for appointments to tribunals, CJI N V Ramana warned of contempt proceedings and said that in a democratic country governed by the rule of law under the Constitution, the government cannot say it will not accept these recommendations.
The bench, also comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and L N Rao, accused the Centre of cherry picking from the list of persons recommended by search-cum-selection committees headed by sitting Supreme Court judges for appointment to the tribunals and read the riot act to Attorney General K K Venugopal.
It said, “Make all appointments in two weeks and give reasons for rejecting names recommended by the selection panels. We will hold our hands for two weeks on initiation of contempt proceedings….
