Man gets electricity bill of ₹128cr, loses connection for not paying

A man in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh has received an electricity bill of over ₹128 crore and electricity department has asked the man to pay the exorbitant bill to restore electricity to his home.

The man named Shamim who lives in Chamri village of Hapur along with his wife, said that he had approached the electricity department to correct the error, but was instead asked to pay the bill. The bill received by Shamim from the electricity department is of ₹128, 45, 95,444 for a home connection of 2 kilowatt.

“No one listens to our pleas, how will we submit that amount? When we went to complain about it, we were told that they won’t resume our electricity connection unless we pay the bill,” Shamim told ANI.

Shamim accused the electricity department of handing him over the bill of the entire city. He also says he gets an average monthly bill of only about ₹ 700 or ₹800.

“I am running from pillar to post but no one is listening. It seems that the electricity department wants me to pay the bill of whole Hapur,” said Shamim.

“We only use fan and light. How can the amount be so high? We are poor. How we will pay such a large amount,” questioned Shamim’s wife Khairu Nisha, reported NDTV.

An electrical engineer with the electricity department said it is not big deal and this must happened due to some “technical fault”. Engineer Ram Sharan assured that the department will rectify the bill once it is sent back to them.

“This must be a technical fault. If they provide us with the bill we will issue them an updated one after rectifying the technical fault in the system. This is no big deal. Technical faults do take place,” Ram Sharan told ANI.
