Mild earthquake hits Assam, tremors felt in West Bengal, Bihar, entire Northeast

Earthquake today in Assam, tremors felt in West Bengal, several parts of Northeast India; magnitude 5.5 on Richter Scale


A mild earthquake struck Assam’s Kokrajhar today. The earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale.


Earthquake tremors were felt all around the region. Earthquake tremors were felt in West Bengal and Bihar, to the west of the epicentre, and up to Arunachal Pradesh to the east.

Earthquake tremors were felt in almost the whole of West Bengal, including Kolkata as well as Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Cooch Behar, Malda and Mushidabad.

In Bihar, earthquake tremors were felt in Patna as well as parts of Kishanganj, Purnea and Katihar. Tremors were also felt in Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

This is the third reported incident of earthquake today. Earlier, light tremors were felt in Jammu and Kashmir as well as in Haryana. An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred at 5.43 am in Jhajjar, Haryana while an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on the Richter Scale occurred at 5.15 am in Jammu and Kashmir.
