The Congress government in Rajasthan has announced loan waiver for farmers – a key election promise of the party that is seen as a factor that helped it trump the BJP in three heartland states in the recent round of assembly elections. In Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Chief Ministers Kamal Nath and Bhupesh Baghel signed off on the waiver hours after taking oath on Monday.
The newly formed Congress governments in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh had already announced farm loan waivers, hours after the new chief ministers took oath.
In Rajasthan, the Ashok Gehlot-led government had sought 10 days to announce the waiver, but managed to do it within two days.
Since Monday, Mr Gandhi has been repeatedly referring to the loan waivers. A cellphone video shot outside parliament show him telling reporters, “Dekha aapne? Aapne dekha? Shuru ho gaya na kaam? (You see? Haven’t we started work?)”.
Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh have waived farm loans.
We asked for 10 days.
We did it in 2.
