NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea filed by Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, challenging the clean chit given by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to then Gujarat CM Narendra Modi in the 2002 Gujarat riots.
A SC bench, headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar and comprising Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and CT Ravikumar, said the appeal filed by Zakia Jafri is “devoid of merits and deserved to be dismissed”.
The case
A day after 58 people died when the Sabarmati Express carrying hundreds of karsevaks returning from Ayodhya was set afire on February 27, 2002, Ahmedabad’s housing complex Gulbarg Society was attacked by a mob in retaliation as communal riots engulfed Gujarat. Sixty-nine people were killed in Gulbarg Society. One of them was former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri. His wife Zakia Jafri filed a case seeking justice for her husband and others…
