NEW DELHI: Balancing the sentiments of Hindus and Muslims, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the Varanasi district magistrate to seal off the “wuzu khana (ablution pond)” area within the Gyanvapi mosque where a shivling was purportedly found during a recent survey, but unhesitatingly lifted the trial court order limiting entry to only 20 Muslims for offering namaz at the mosque.
Sitting an hour beyond the official business hours in SC till 5.10pm, a bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and P S Narasimha patiently heard protests from senior advocate Huzefa A Ahmadi, who appeared for the committee of management, Anjuman Intezamia Masjid, Varanasi, that sealing off the “wuzu khana” area would impede namaz as it is essential to perform ablution prior to prayers.
