Venezuela scientists to record the end of a glacier

Glaciers are retreating around the world. The Andes are no exception: in Venezuela, the ice has mostly already disappeared.

A team of scientists in Venezuela is determined to record what happens as a country loses its last glacier.Once the Humboldt glacier disappears, Venezuela will be the first country in South America to lose all its glaciers. Scientists have predicted that it could vanish within the next two decades. Monitoring the glacier is no easy task, as the trek to the ice sheet is difficult and regular visits will be needed, notes Luis Daniel Llambí, a mountain ecologist at the University of the Andes in Mérida.
