Speaking during a session at Agenda Aaj Tak in New Delhi, Yechury said the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA will meet the same fate as it did in 2004 i.e. defeat in Lok Sabha election.

“Today the BJP is asking Modi versus who? In 2003-04, it asked Vajpayeeji versus who. We all know the result. Manmohan Singh remained India’s prime minister for the next 10 years without a break,” Yechury said, adding that the result in 2019 will be the same as 2004-BJP’s defeat.

When asked about DMK president MK Stalin’s comment that Rahul Gandhi should be the Opposition’s prime ministerial candidate, Yechury said that Stalin is entitled to his views. “We don’t agree with him. The Opposition will name its PM candidate after 2019 Lok Sabha polls.”

When asked about his participation during the grand Opposition meeting in New Delhi on December 10 where Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee was also present, Yechury said, “I attended the meeting because it was aimed at understanding and discussing how the anti-BJP votes can be saved. It wasn’t about forming any alliance.”

He made it clear that the Left won’t be forming an alliance with Mamata to check the BJP. “Opposing Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal and joining an alliance in Delhi, of which she is a part, is not opportunistic politics.

Our slogan is ‘Mamata hatao Bangal bajacho, Modi hatao desh batao’ (Remove Mamata and save Bengal, remove Modi and save India)”.

Yechury said the Left parties are not concerned about individuals. “We don’t want to remove the BJP because Narendra Modi is there. We want to remove it because Modi’s policies have ruined the lives of the common people. It is not about an individual,” he said.
